Wow, you have a weird concept of good design.
Thank you for this, Michael! You have made an entire community of actors, directors, and designers happy with this post. Difficult to do in your position, but thanks for the recognition you've provided to so many of us.
I thought EWU's set design for "Romeo and Juliet" was way more impressive than "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie."
ART us a comedy, Bobo. It may have serious themes but it's intended as a comedy. If it came off as a drama to you, well, that's either a misguided production or a confused critic.
How come no coverage of Patty Duke's three day event?
I didn't attend the Patty Duke interviews, but there was a preview in print in the June 3 issue of The Inlander.
Despite its many jokes, I definitely feel that Art leans more toward the dramatic. I think the conflict of ego vs. friendship is a very serious theme. But I see what you mean, and wouldn't want to be dogmatic. This is sort of a Stanislavski-vs.-Chekhov-on-The-Cherry-Orchard thing. Mixed moods are hard to pull off and harder to define.
I didn't see the EWU R&J. I know that they were very excited about that set's beauty. I didn't make it out there.
How can you nominate an actor for an In Concert Performance in the same category as musical performers who have spent months preparing a role?An In Concert Performance consists of about five rehearsals and it is not necessary to be off book .If anything what is accomplished is an entertaining night giving the audience a park and bark performance of the show .This may be something to rethink in the future Bobo.I enjoy going to an In Concert but in no way find it comparable to a complete production .The performers are as engaged with their scripts as they are with the other actors on stage.

*Chess* had a great deal of blocking (scenes in the aisles, across a chess board, strolling out from behind the chorus, on the downstage-right stairs, etc.), some costuming, and quite a few lighting cues. On the continuum of unstaged to fully staged, it was well toward the fully staged end of the spectrum. You can play the apples-and-oranges game all you want -- these two performances are not comparable, so one should be disqualified; no fair, no fair -- but listeners have imaginations, and I know when I feel that I've witnessed an emotionally moving and talented performance, even if the staging is merely minimal.
Good call on String of Pearls for best ensemble, Bobo. I couldn't agree more!
Thanks you, Bobo. Agreed on most of these, esp. String of Pearls ensemble. However, why no honorable mentions for Ignite's excellent reader's theater productions or actors? These plays involve many rehearsals and lots of work from great community actors.

Those who have participated in "in concerts" know that it may be only 5 GROUP rehearsals, but that just means that the vocalists (especially leads) have to do more work on their own to be ready for the "rehearsals". There is still character work, learning back story, memorizing major solos, interpretive study (since there is less dialog to carry the story). Please don't scoff until you've tried it!
I have a good deal of respect for the In Concerts and enjoy them a great deal but I would have to agree with the other blogger having participated in the process myself, the final product is not as fully realized as a complete production but after all it's not supposed to be ,It's a concert .Their's always that feeling of if I only had the rehearsal time to explore this character for the actual production what might I have accomplished then .So I would have to say in my opinion they should not be included in these awards .I think Ms. Dawson should have been more appropriately chosen for "Pirates of Penzance".
Oh come on it is still no where near the work and the time one does spend for a full on production!
Maybe we should ask ourselves WWTTD (What would the Tonys do?) They would not, nor have they ever, included staged readings in their consideration.
